ClinX stands for the decentralized conversion of previously unused wooden residues into heat and at the same time into electricity.

The unique feature of ClinX is its relatively small performance class <1 MWel in combination with decentralization and its broad fuel spectrum. ClinX burns heterogeneous, wooden residues and thus converts heat and at the same time electricity, thanks to the externally fired micro gas turbine.

The ClinX CHP system is designed for recycling heterogeneous, wooden fuels. The unique feature of ClinX is its ability to convert even wooden residues with a high amount of branches and bark and a high water content. These heterogeneous wooden residues be converted into electricity and heat in the decentralized power range <1 MWel.

ClinX recycles residual wood (crown wood, root wood), landscape maintenance wood (roadside wood, wood from the maintenance of parks and biotopes), untreated industrial waste wood (sawdust, sawdust, wood waste, wood chips, rind, wood dust) and damaged wood (broken logs or wood chips, and  wood with pest infestation, e.g. by bark beetles).

The grain size of the fuel can include sizes P16 to P100 (according to DIN EN ISO 172225-1: 2014).

Hidden Fuels - unused potential

So far, large amounts of wooden residues main unused due to high logistics costs. In Germany, this affects 11.8 million tons of residual wood from forests and 1.1 million tons of landscape maintenance wood. Only residual forest wood contain an unused potential of 218 PJ (source: Fachagentur für nachwachsende Rohstoffe 2015). In addition, solid wooden residues are often burned without utilizing heat efficiently and without generating electricity simultaneously.

Fuel Consumption

The fuel consumption of ClinX depends on the power range, as well as the type of wood, water content and calorific value.

ClinX is available in two performance classes. The system combines powerful performance with environmentally friendly efficiency.

Technology

The basic principle of cogeneration of heat and power is explained quickly: When a fuel is burned, heat is generated first. In the subsequent step, this drives a turbine, that converts mechanical into electrical energy. The efficiency of energy generation is increased, since the same combustion heat generates both, usable heat and electricity.

ClinX combines a combustion chamber with an “externally fired micro gas turbine”, which only works with clean fresh air. Due to the use of advanced air bearings, the micro gas turbine does not require any lubricants or oils. This enables very low-maintenance operation with high levels of efficiency.

System components

 The high-temperature combustion chamber consists out of temperature-resistant fireclay elements and is equipped with high-quality insulation. This enables temperatures of > 1000 ° C and guarantees efficient combustion with minimal heat radiation. The hydraulically moved, adjustable feed grate guarantees continuous combustion with different fuel quality. The transport of the fuel causes the combustion residues to be continuously removed. The furnace feed is operated with a hydraulic ram, which enables even problematic, fibrous fuels to be easily introduced. Due to the automatic ash removal, the cleaning of the B + K combustion unit requires very little effort and is carried out without interrupting the combustion process. The combustion residues are removed from the combustion chamber using a scraper chain conveyor and a deashing screw and stored in a refractory ash container. With the integrated doors, the design of the combustion unit stands for easy maintenance access and service-friendly construction. Partial recirculation of the exhaust gases to the combustion chamber takes place in order to optimize the degree of burnout, reduce fuel consumption and reduce emissions.

A high-temperature particle separator next to the combustion chamber was yet mainly reserved for large power plants; now it is used in ClinX and ensures compliance with BImSchG and TA-Luft, without the need to install a special electrical separator.


The high-temperature particle separator is tailored to the combustion chamber; the vortex from the combustion chamber is used directly for particle separation. The system can also be built as a highly resistant ceramic version for particularly difficult materials.

The heat exchanger is not only characterized by its high temperature resistance, but also by its resistance to the chemical effects of the combustion gas. The flow-optimized design can be scaled to different performance classes.

The micro gas turbine is the heart of ClinX. The drive unit of the micro gas turbine is referred to as a power head. Teh power head consists of the turbo group, which contains a compressor wheel, a turbine wheel, and a connecting shaft. The turbo group is embedded by air bearings so that no lubricants or coolants are required.

The power head including the turbo group is the central element of the micro gas turbine. Additional components of the micro gas turbine are generator, power electronics and control.

ClinX uses regenerative instead of fossil fuels and thus prevents unnecessary CO2 emissions. CO2 is released when biomass is burned, but it is bound again by sustainable forestry and forest care.

ClinX is the decentralised combined heat and power system from B+K. With ClinX, you can convert your previously unused wooden residues into heat and, at the same time, into electricity, directly on site.

Compared to existing systems, the special feature of ClinX results from the decentralised performance class < 1MWel in combination with fuel flexibility.  ClinX even uses residual materials with a high water content and high branch and bark content. During combustion, heat is generated which you can use in your company. In addition to the heat, you also generate electricity at the same time, thanks to an externally fired micro gas turbine.

How exactly does the process work?

In the combustion chamber, the residues burn at temperatures of up to 1200 °C. The resulting heat is conducted into a unique high-temperature heat exchanger. In parallel, the micro gas turbine with air-bearings draws in clean ambient air, compresses it and directs it into the heat exchanger.

Inside the heat exchanger the heat is transferred from the flue gas to the compressed ambient air. The heated, compressed air is then expanded in the turbine. Via a shaft, the turbine drives a generator so that the kinetic energy is converted into electricity. The turbine exhaust air is fed back into the combustion chamber as hot combustion air, increasing the efficiency of the system.
